K-beauty shopping in Korea: what to buy & where
Korea is one of the best places in the world to buy skincare and makeup — it's affordable, the testers are everywhere, and staff rarely pressure you. You don't need to speak Korean to shop well. Here's how to do it without overpaying or overbuying.
Where to shop
- Olive Young — the big health-and-beauty chain, on almost every busy street. Huge selection, testers out, frequent 1+1 deals, and English-friendly flagship stores (Myeongdong). The easiest one-stop.
- Daiso — for very cheap basics (cotton pads, small tools, some skincare under ₩5,000). Great for travel-size buys.
- Myeongdong (Seoul) — street packed with brand stores and vendors handing out free sheet masks. Fun, touristy, and easy to compare brands.
- Department store basements & duty-free — for premium/luxury brands, often with foreigner discounts and duty-free pickup at the airport.
What's actually worth buying
- Sunscreen — Korean sunscreens are famously lightweight and cosmetically elegant. A signature buy.
- Sheet masks — cheap, light to pack, great gifts. Buy a variety pack rather than 50 of one kind.
- Cushion foundation — the Korean invention; buildable, portable coverage.
- Centella (cica) and snail-mucin products — popular soothing/hydrating ingredients.
- Cleansing oils & balms — the first step of the famous "double cleanse."
- Lip & cheek tints — long-lasting, small, easy souvenirs.

Tax refund (save ~8–10%)
Foreign visitors can get a tax refund on purchases at stores displaying "Tax Free." At Olive Young Global and many shops, spend over about ₩15,000 in one store, show your passport, and either get an instant discount or claim it at the airport. Keep receipts and the goods unopened until you leave. See our tax refund & shopping guide for the step-by-step.
Smart-shopper tips
- Use the testers. Patch-test on your hand, especially if you have sensitive skin.
- Don't overbuy. Skincare expires — a huge haul may go bad before you finish it. Buy what you'll realistically use.
- Check ingredients if you react easily — fragrance and essential oils are common irritants. Translation apps read Korean labels well.
- 1+1 and gift sets are genuinely good value; ask staff which items are on promotion.
- Bring a small tote — you'll buy more than you planned.
