Cherry Blossoms & Autumn Foliage in Korea
Korea's two best-looking seasons are also its shortest. Cherry blossoms flare up for about a week in spring; autumn colors sweep the country for a few weeks in fall. Both move across the peninsula on a predictable path, so with a little timing you can plan a trip right into peak.
When cherry blossoms bloom
Blossoms open south first, then north, following the warmth. As a rough guide:
- Late March — Jeju and the far south open first, followed by Busan and the southern coast.
- Early April — the center of the country, including Daegu and Gyeongju.
- Early to mid April — Seoul and the north.
Peak bloom lasts only about a week, and the exact dates shift every year with the weather. Treat any calendar as approximate and watch the annual bloom forecast as your trip nears.
💡 Dates move year to year. Before locking in flights, check that season's forecast and the live weather by city.
Best cherry blossom spots
- Seoul — Yeouido's riverside road (Yunjungno) is the classic, along with Seokchon Lake by Lotte World and the palace grounds.
- Jinhae (near Changwon) — the Gunhangje Festival is Korea's largest blossom event; Gyeonghwa Station and Yeojwacheon stream are the signature scenes. Expect crowds.
- Gyeongju — blossoms around Bomun Lake and the historic tomb parks pair petals with ancient sights.
- Busan & Jeju — earliest to bloom, and lovely alongside beaches and coast.
When & where for autumn foliage
Fall runs the opposite direction — north to south, starting in the high mountains:
- Mid October — Seoraksan and the northern peaks color first.
- Late October — inland mountains and Naejangsan, one of Korea's most famous foliage spots, and Nami Island near Seoul.
- Early to mid November — Seoul's palaces and Bukhansan, Gyeongju, and the southern cities.
🍁 In Seoul, you don't need to travel far — palace grounds, Bukhansan, and tree-lined streets like the ginkgo avenues color beautifully in early-to-mid November.
Practical tips
- Go early or on weekdays. Famous spots (Yeouido, Jinhae, Naejangsan) get very crowded on peak weekends.
- Build in a buffer. Because peak is short and weather-dependent, a trip of several days is safer than betting on one date.
- Dress for it. Spring evenings are cool; autumn mountains are cold and windy — layers help. See Seasons & packing.
- Combine with sights. Blossoms in Gyeongju or foliage on a day trip (Nami) make the most of a short window.
