Hanbok rental in Seoul: how it works, what it costs
Those people in flowing traditional dress posing in front of Gyeongbokgung? Almost none of them are in costume for an event — they rented a hanbok from one of the dozens of shops around the palace, usually for a few hours and less than the price of lunch for two. It's one of the easiest "very Korea" experiences to do spontaneously, and wearing one even gets you into the royal palaces for free. Here's the whole process, start to finish.
The short version
- Where: rental shops cluster around Gyeongbokgung Station and Anguk Station, within walking distance of the palace and Bukchon Hanok Village. You will not struggle to find one.
- Price: a standard hanbok is typically ₩15,000–25,000 for about 4 hours. Premium/"theme" designs run roughly ₩40,000–80,000. Hair styling is usually ₩5,000–10,000 extra (some shops include it).
- The perk: wear a full hanbok and entry to Seoul's royal palaces — Gyeongbokgung included — is free.
- Timing: Gyeongbokgung normally closes on Tuesdays; most other palaces close Mondays. Plan the rental around an open palace.
What renting actually looks like
- Pick a hanbok from racks organized by color and style — staff at shops near the palace are used to foreign visitors and sizes are flexible (most pieces tie rather than button). Men's hanbok and kids' sizes are standard stock.
- Add the extras. Most rentals include an inner skirt and a small bag; braided hair styling and hairpins are the usual paid add-on. Winter visits can add a padded overcoat or vest at many shops.
- Leave your clothes in a locker — shops store your things (and usually your daypack) for free while you're out.
- Watch the clock. The rental window (commonly 4 hours) starts when you leave, and you need to return before the shop closes. Ask the return time out loud before you go — it's the one detail people get burned on.
The free palace entry, precisely
Visitors in hanbok enter the royal palaces free — this has been official policy for years and covers Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung, Changgyeonggung and Gyeonghuigung. Two fine points worth knowing:
- It must be a full hanbok — top and bottom together, not a jacket thrown over jeans. Anything you rent from a palace-area shop qualifies.
- Don't rent it just to save on tickets. Gyeongbokgung's regular adult admission is around ₩3,000 — the rental costs several times that. The free entry is a bonus; the experience and the photos are the point.
Booking: walk in or reserve?
- Weekdays, normal season: just walk in. Shops open around 9 AM to match the palace.
- Weekends, cherry-blossom season (late March–April) and foliage season (late October–November): book a day or more ahead on Klook, GetYourGuide or the shop's own site — online rates are often cheaper than walk-in, and you skip the queue for fitting rooms.
- Bookings are usually by time slot, not a specific dress — you still choose your hanbok on arrival.
Photo spots and timing
- Go at opening (9 AM). The light is soft, the courtyards are empty, and summer heat hasn't arrived. By late morning every photogenic gate has a queue.
- Inside Gyeongbokgung: the throne hall (Geunjeongjeon) courtyard for the classic shot, and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion by the pond for the postcard one.
- The changing of the royal guard happens at the main gate at 10:00 and 14:00 on days the palace is open — a colorful backdrop if your timing lines up (ceremonies can be scaled back in extreme weather).
- Bukchon Hanok Village is a 15-minute walk east — traditional alleyways that pair perfectly with the outfit. It's a residential area, so keep voices down. Insadong and the Samcheong-dong cafe streets are also in hanbok-walking range.
- Most shops will happily take a couple of photos of you; for more, tripods are generally allowed in palace courtyards but check signage.
Season by season
- Spring & autumn — the sweet spot: comfortable layers, blossom or foliage backdrops. Also the busiest; book ahead.
- Summer (June–August) — hanbok layers are hot and humid Seoul is hotter. Pick the lightest fabric the shop has, go first thing in the morning, and plan a cafe break. A hand fan is a period-accurate accessory for a reason.
- Winter (December–February) — wear thermal layers underneath (they won't show) and ask about padded vests or overcoats. Clear winter days give you crisp photos and empty courtyards.
- Rain — palaces stay open and look moody in drizzle, but silk-like fabrics and puddles don't mix; some shops charge for heavily soiled returns. Grab a clear umbrella from a convenience store.
Small print worth knowing
- Bring a card or some cash; some smaller shops prefer cash for the styling add-ons. See money & payments.

- Wear comfortable shoes. Sneakers under a hanbok is what everyone does; the skirt hides them, and palace grounds are gravel.
