Korea in October

Average temperatures, the day-night gap, foliage timing, October festivals, public holidays and why the first week is the busiest.

October is the month many Korean travel writers quietly admit is the best one. Summer humidity is gone, the typhoon season has all but ended, skies are at their clearest, and the first reds and golds begin to move down the mountains from the north-east. It is also the month with two public holidays, a major lantern festival and a major international film festival, all inside the same two weeks.

This guide covers what the numbers say about October weather, how to dress for a day that starts near 10°C and peaks above 20°C, which events are confirmed for 2026, and why the first week is busier than the rest. All figures were checked on 23 August 2026 against the sources at the bottom of the page.

October weather: the averages

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) publishes 30-year climate normals for 1991–2020; the figures below are those normals, and the official lookup tool is linked in the sources. The national picture is "warm afternoons, cool nights, little rain".

(KMA 1991–2020 normals, 2026-08-23 checked.) Three things stand out. First, Seoul's daily mean drops from 21.7°C in September to 15.0°C in October and 7.5°C in November, so the month is a slide: early October afternoons still feel like late summer, while the last week's mornings can feel like early winter. Second, the gap between Seoul's average high and low is almost 10°C, the single most important fact for packing. Third, rain is light: Seoul's 52 mm over about five rain days makes October one of the driest months of the year, and October sunshine averages 206.5 hours.

Typhoons are a September story rather than an October one. KMA's 1991–2020 statistics show an average of 0.8 typhoons affecting Korea in September but only 0.1 in October (KMA typhoon statistics, 2026-08-23 checked). A late storm is possible in the first days of the month but rare, and by mid-October the risk is negligible.

What to wear: dress for the day-night gap

The mistake first-time October visitors make is packing for one temperature. A typical mid-October day in Seoul starts around 10°C, reaches 20°C by mid-afternoon and falls back into the low teens after sunset: cold at the bus stop at 8 a.m., warm at a palace at 2 p.m., cold again at a food stall at 9 p.m.

Autumn foliage: what October does and does not deliver

A common disappointment is arriving in Seoul on 5 October expecting red maples. Going by the Korea Forest Service's nationwide peak dates below, Seoul colour arrives in the second half of the month and peaks around the turn of November. The north-eastern mountains change first. The Korea Forest Service's 2025 forecast map (published 1 October 2025) put the start of peak maple colour at Seoraksan around 25 October, with nationwide peak averages of 28 October for ginkgo, 31 October for oak and 1 November for maple, and noted that peak timing has slipped roughly 4–5 days later than the 10-year average (Korea Forest Service, 2026-08-23 checked).

If foliage is the main reason for your trip, book the last ten days of October for Seoraksan and the northern mountains, and early November for Seoul, Gyeongju and the south. The 2026 forecast map is not published until around the start of October, so treat these dates as a guide. (Korea Tourism Organization public holiday list, 2026-08-23 checked.) Two long weekends in the first eleven days means heavy domestic travel: KTX seats to Busan and Gangneung, hotels in Gyeongju, Jeonju and Sokcho, and rental cars on Jeju all tighten. Chuseok, the much larger holiday, falls on 24–26 September in 2026, just before the month begins.

Why early October is the busiest stretch

Korean long weekends are only half the story. China's National Day "Golden Week" holiday runs 1–7 October in 2026, and Korea is one of the nearest overseas destinations. In October 2025 Korea received 1,739,020 foreign visitors, up 8.7% on October 2024, and China was the largest market at about 472,000 arrivals, ahead of Japan (317,000) and Taiwan (161,000) (Korea Tourism Organization figures, 2026-08-23 checked). Two policy changes feed into 2026: Korea began allowing Chinese group tourists (three or more people booked through designated agencies) to enter visa-free for up to 15 days from 29 September 2025, and the Ministry of Justice announced in June 2026 that this scheme now runs to 31 December 2026 (Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Travel Times report, 2026-08-23 checked).

Expect the first week of October to be the most crowded stretch of the autumn at popular spots such as Myeongdong, Hongdae and the main palaces, and in Jeju and Busan. If your dates are flexible, arriving on or after 12 October gives the same weather with thinner crowds. If they are fixed, reach the big-name spots at opening time and shop on weekday mornings.

Jinju is the one most worth building a trip around. The 2026 edition runs sixteen days under the theme 역사의 강 · 평화를 담다 ("History's River, Peace Within" on the official site), with lanterns floated on the river and a pontoon bridge across it. It is an easy day or overnight trip from Busan and a long day from Seoul. Weekends are far busier than weekdays, and the first weekend coincides with the National Foundation Day holiday.

BIFF is open to the public, not just industry. For reference, the 30th edition in 2025 opened online ticketing on 5 September for the galas and 9 September for general screenings (8–12 days before the 17 September opening), allowed free cancellation until the day before the festival and charged 1,000 won per ticket for cancellations during it (BIFF notice, 2025 edition). Expect a similar rhythm for 2026, but confirm on biff.kr in early September.

Booking tips for an October trip

  1. Lock in accommodation for 1–11 October first. Two Korean long weekends plus Golden Week make this the tightest stretch of the autumn. Jeju, Busan, Gyeongju and Sokcho fill earliest. Hotel options by area are covered in /guide/where-to-stay.

  3. Jinju and Seoraksan on weekdays. Both are far easier Monday to Thursday. If you can only do a weekend, arrive the night before.
  4. Carry a little cash. See /guide/money-and-payments for which cards work and how much cash is sensible for festival stalls.
  5. Bring the outer layer even in the first week. Mornings near 10°C arrive sooner than the afternoon highs suggest.
  6. Shopping in the first week means longer tax-refund queues at department stores and the airport; the rules are in /guide/tax-refund-shopping.

Days shorten quickly through the month, so do outdoor sightseeing in the afternoon and save the lantern festival and Haneul Park light show for after dark.

Q. How cold does it actually get in Korea in October?
Cooler than the daytime highs suggest. Seoul's 1991–2020 average low for the month is 10.6°C, and by the last week of October early-morning temperatures in the capital regularly fall into single digits. Afternoons are comfortable (average high 20.2°C). Busan and Jeju are milder (average lows 14.5°C and 15.7°C).

Q. What should I wear for an October day in Seoul?
Dress in layers rather than for one temperature. A typical mid-October day starts near 10°C, reaches about 20°C in mid-afternoon and drops back into the low teens after dark, so a thin base layer, a light knit or fleece and a packable windproof outer layer cover the whole day. After the first week, choose trousers over shorts, and carry a light scarf for evenings. Add an insulated layer, gloves and a hat for mountain hikes such as Seoraksan.

Q. Why is the first week of October so crowded?
Three things overlap: Korea's National Foundation Day long weekend (3–5 October 2026), Hangeul Day on Friday 9 October, and China's Golden Week holiday (1–7 October). In October 2025 Korea received about 1.74 million foreign visitors, with China the largest market at roughly 472,000. Arriving from 12 October onwards avoids most of it.

Q. Will I see autumn leaves in Seoul in October?
Only late in the month. Going by Korea Forest Service forecasts, Seoul colour arrives in the last part of October and peaks around early November. For October colour, head to Seoraksan in the north-east, where the Korea Forest Service forecast peak maple colour beginning around 25 October in 2025. The 2026 forecast is published around 1 October.
