Korea itinerary: 3, 5 & 7-day routes for first-timers
The single most common question first-timers ask is "how many days do I need in Korea?" The honest answer: five days is the sweet spot, three works for Seoul only, and seven lets you add a second city without rushing. Below are realistic routes that link to our detailed guides for each stop.
How many days? A quick guide
- 3 days — Seoul only. Palaces, one modern district, one market. Tight but great.
- 5 days — Seoul (3–4 days) + a day trip, or a quick add-on of Busan/Jeju. The best all-rounder.
- 7 days — Seoul + Busan or Jeju comfortably, with time to slow down.
- 10+ days — Seoul + Busan + Jeju or Gyeongju, the full loop.
The classic 3-day Seoul itinerary
- Day 1 — History & old Seoul: Gyeongbokgung Palace (catch the changing of the guard) → Bukchon Hanok Village → Insadong tea houses. Rent a hanbok for free palace entry and photos.
- Day 2 — Modern Seoul: Myeongdong shopping & street food → N Seoul Tower → evening in Hongdae or Gangnam. See our Seoul guide for neighborhood picks.
- Day 3 — Your pick: a day trip (Nami Island, Suwon fortress) or the DMZ, then last-minute shopping and a jjimjilbang to unwind.
Get around with the subway and taxis — read getting around first, and set up the right apps before you arrive.
The 5-day itinerary (Seoul + one add-on)
- Days 1–3: the 3-day Seoul plan above.
- Day 4: take the KTX to Busan (about 2.5 hours). Haeundae Beach, Gamcheon Culture Village, Jagalchi fish market — our Busan guide has the two dishes to eat.
- Day 5: more Busan, then fly home from Busan (Gimhae) or KTX back to Seoul.
Prefer nature? Swap Busan for a short flight to Jeju Island — Hallasan, Seongsan sunrise peak, and coastal drives.
The 7-day itinerary (two cities, no rush)
- Days 1–4: Seoul, unhurried, plus a DMZ or day trip.
- Days 5–6: Busan (KTX down) — beaches, markets, temples by the sea.
- Day 7: either Gyeongju (an hour from Busan — see our Gyeongju guide for Korea's ancient capital) or a slow last day back in Seoul.
Planning tips
- Base yourself centrally in Seoul (Myeongdong, Hongdae, or near a subway hub) — see where to stay.
- Book KTX and Jeju flights early in peak seasons; domestic flights are cheap and quick.
- Don't over-pack the days. Seoul is big and transit eats time — three or four stops a day is realistic.
- Match your trip to the season — cherry blossoms (early April), autumn foliage (late Oct), and the summer monsoon all change the plan. See seasons & packing.
- Budget the essentials — T-money card, SIM/eSIM, and cash for markets. Start with your first week.
